Churchill insurance firm axe Martin Clunes from TV ads after actor is handed driving ban

ACTOR Martin Clunes has been dropped from a car insurance campaign after being disqualified from driving.

The Men Behaving Badly and Doc Martin star featured in Churchill's television adverts alongside the firm's trademark nodding dog for almost a year.

But after he told them he had been banned from the road under totting-up rules when he reached 12 penalty points, the company dropped him.

Churchill said: "We have worked with Martin Clunes in an advertising campaign since December 2011.

"Martin recently informed Churchill his driving licence has been suspended after he accumulated penalty points for four speeding offences.

"Churchill currently have no adverts with Martin on air and will be moving forward with new advertising in the New Year."

It is not clear where the offences happened or how fast Clunes was travelling.

His agent, Independent Talent Group, did not respond to requests for comment last night.

The ads were part of a marketing exercise thought to cost in the region of £50million.

When they began, Churchill marketing director Amanda Walker described Clunes as "highly credible".
